There are two main reasons why I thinking shooting religious imagery works really well:
1) Most of the buildings, artifacts and imagery is spectacular artwork already in its own right often made with painstaking attention to detail.
2) the lighting is usually very powerful - often dark, but with a fantastic range of textures and colours: stone, metal, coloured glass.
It can be quite a challenge just to shoot the photos in this kind of environment and the creation of any subsequent artwork has to be suitably subtle to emphasise the nature of the underlying art rather than destroy it. But I think the results are worth it, regardless of your religious beliefs.
